Disadvantages of the Ground Source Heat Pump

When it comes to installing an eco-friendly heating system, ground source heat pump is by far the only option you have. There are several advantages of using these systems. High efficiency, consistent heat, low environmental impact and low operating costs are some of them. However, before you decide to install these geo thermal items, there are a few important things worth considering. Even if we don’t get into the details, the most intriguing part is, despite being eco-friendly these systems have not been embraced by everybody. This invariably calls for deeper investigation into the reasons why ground source heat pump has failed to register an all around success.

Money is the first hindrance that prevents people from installing geo thermal pump or Ground source Heat pump. It is anything but cheap. The whole setup typically can cost up to twice the price of traditional heating systems. Though by getting these energy efficient systems installed you would be able to come out ahead in the long run, yet if you are a constant shifter then it is always better to avoid the ground source varieties.

Availability is another major consideration here. Even if you crave to have one of these geo thermal pumps installed at your property, there is no guarantee absolutely that you would be able to do that in a jiffy. Moreover, the ground at the place where you plan to have them installed should also come with certain characteristics. If it is not warm enough, then the necessary heat will not be generated.

In spite of all the talks of a ground source heat pump being more environment friendly than other heating systems like say the Air source heat pump, the reality is, they can never be expected to have zero impact on the surroundings. For open loop systems, you would ideally need lots and lots of fresh water which is not available always. Last but not the least, installing a ground source heat pump is no child’s play. You would never be able to accomplish the job peacefully applying do-it-yourself strategies.
